MOMENTUM

Last season, Wyoming had high expectations, but had a disappointing overall record of 4-8.  Three of those four wins were consecutive wins against conference opponents before Wyoming lost the final game of last season against MWC Co-Champions San Diego State.  After last season, Head Coach Dave Christensen massively reorganized his coaching staff.  Overall, the Wyoming football program appears to be in disarray.

GRADE (Momentum): D plus

COACHING

Here is a news article explaining the massive reorganization of the Wyoming football staff: http://www.gowyo.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/021313aab.html

Head Coach
Current Tenure as Head Coach at Wyoming: Dave Christensen is in his fifth season as the Head Coach at Wyoming.  Christensen has an overall record of 22-28 (44.0% wins) as the Head Coach at Wyoming.

Last Coaching Position: Offensive Coordinator at Missouri (1997-2008)

Prior Experience as Head Coach: None

Other Notable Facts: In 2011, Christensen led Wyoming to an overall record of 8-5 and he was selected as the 2011 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.  Consequently, Christensen was awarded with a contract extension through December 31, 2016.  However, last season (2012), Christensen significantly underperformed and Wyoming had an overall record of 4-8.  As the Head Coach at Wyoming, Christensen has had 2 good seasons (2009, 7-6 record)(2011, 8-5 record) and 2 bad seasons (2010, 3-9 record)(2012, 4-8 record).  As the Offensive coordinator at Missouri, Christensen was selected as the 2007 National Offensive Coordinator of the Year by Rivals.com.  Christensen was very successful as the Offensive Coordinator at Missouri where he produced many highly ranked units and decorated players.  Nearly all of Christensen’s coaching experience is on offense.  Christensen is among the top innovators of the no-huddle, spread offense system.

Commentary: Christensen could be considered “on the hot seat” as the Head Coach at Wyoming based on last season and his overall record of 22-28.  Christensen’s current contract expires on December 31, 2016.

Offensive Coordinator
In February 2013, Jim Harding and Pete Kaligis were promoted to Co-Offensive Coordinators at Wyoming.  Harding is also listed as the Running-Game Coordinator and the Offensive Line Coach at Wyoming.  Kaligis is also the Running Backs Coach at Wyoming.

Head Coach Dave Christensen will call plays on game day.  Christensen has 12 years of experience as an Offensive Coordinator.  As the Offensive coordinator at Missouri, Christensen was selected as the 2007 National Offensive Coordinator of the Year by Rivals.com.  Christensen was very successful as the Offensive Coordinator at Missouri where he produced many highly ranked units and decorated players.  Last season, the Wyoming offense was ranked #70 in the nation for total offense.

Defensive Coordinator
Current Tenure as Defensive Coordinator at Wyoming: Chris Tormey is in his second season as the Defensive Coordinator at Wyoming.  Tormey is also the Safeties Coach at Wyoming.  Last season, the Wyoming defense was ranked #106 in the nation for total defense.

Last Coaching Position: Linebackers Coach at Washington State University (2011)

Prior Experience as Defensive Coordinator: Washington (1993-1994)

Other Notable Facts: Tormey was the Head Coach at Nevada (2000-2003)(overall record of 16-31 (34.0% wins)) and the Head Coach at Idaho (1995-1999)(overall record of 33-23 (58.9% wins)).  Tormey was selected as the 1998 Big West Conference Coach of the Year.  Tormey was an assistant coach at Washington when the team won the 1991 National Championship.  Tormey was an all-conference linebacker at Idaho.

Special Teams Coordinator
Current Tenure as Special Teams Coordinator at Wyoming: Robin Ross is in his second season as the Special Teams Coordinator at Wyoming.  Ross is also the Linebackers Coach at Wyoming.

Last Coaching Position: Linebackers Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at UNLV (2011)

Prior Experience as Special Teams Coordinator: None noted, but coached special teams at Oregon (2001-2004)

Other Notable Facts: Ross was the Head Coach at Western Washington (D-2) (2006-2008).  Ross has extensive experience as a defensive coach, including some experience as a defensive coordinator.  Ross also has experience coaching tight ends.  Ross was an all-conference offensive lineman at Washington State.  Ross’s experience playing offensive line and coaching tight ends is valuable for coaching special teams blocking techniques and schemes.

GRADE (Coaching): D plus (grade lowered due to disorganization, disruption, apparent dissension, and 2012 performance)

Week 1: Wyoming at Nebraska
Game #: 1
Game Date: Saturday, August 31, 2013
Kickoff Time: 6:00pm MT (7:00pm CST)
Stadium: Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, NE)(Check it out: http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=734)
Elevation of Stadium: 1,175 feet
Elevation Change for Wyoming: decrease by 6,045 feet
Travel Distance for Wyoming: insignificant (less than 1,000 miles)
Time Change for Wyoming: increase by 1 hour (MT to CT)
Field Surface: artificial (FieldTurf)
Weather: temperature may be in the upper 90’s at kickoff (7:00pm CT), but will cool during the game
Stadium Noise: high (Nebraska has had 325 consecutive sellout games and counting)
Commentary: Maximizing Home Field Advantage: Nebraska’s first 5 games of the 2013 season are all home games.  In the 2013 season, Nebraska plays 8 home games and only 4 away games.

Week 2: Idaho at Wyoming
Game #: 2
Game Date: Saturday, September 7, 2013
Kickoff Time: TBA
Stadium: Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium (Laramie, WY)
Elevation of Stadium: 7,220 feet

Time Change for Idaho: increase by 1 hour (PT to MT)
Field Surface: artificial (Desso Challenge Pro 60)
Weather: (Kickoff time TBA) insignificant (Laramie rarely reaches 90 degrees)
Stadium Noise: moderate
Commentary: Idaho plays their home games in a dome (Kibbie Dome: http://www.uidaho.edu/uss/kibbie), so outdoor games can be an adjustment problem for some of their players, especially kicker and punter.  Idaho has a significant elevation increase of 4,640 feet that will likely have an adverse effect in the 4th quarter, especially on Idaho linemen.

Week 3: Northern Colorado (FCS) at Wyoming
Game #: 3

Kickoff Time: TBA
Stadium: Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium (Laramie, WY)

Travel Distance for Wyoming: insignificant (less than 1,000 miles)
Time Change for Wyoming: none
Field Surface: artificial (FieldTurf)
Weather: (kickoff time is TBA) temperature could reach 90 degrees during the afternoon
Stadium Noise: moderate
Commentary: Last season, both Air Force Head Coach Troy Calhoun and Wyoming Head Coach Dave Christensen engaged in “conduct unbecoming” of a head football coach.  Their conduct was most offensive because both coaches would surely severely berate and punish their players for similar conduct.

Week 5: Wyoming at Texas State
Game #: 5
Game Date: Saturday, September 28, 2013
Kickoff Time: TBA
Stadium: Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium (San Marcos, TX)(Check it out: http://www.txstatebobcats.com/sports/2010/7/29/FB_0729105705.aspx?tab=jimwackerfieldatbobcatstadium)

Stadium Noise: moderate
Commentary: Texas State and UTSA have the potential to reach national prominence in a few years

Week 6: October 1, 2013 through October 7, 2013
BYE WEEK

Week 7: New Mexico at Wyoming (MWC Mountain Division Game)
Game #: 6

Weather: (kickoff time is TBA) temperature could be in the 40’s by nighttime, but New Mexico practices in similar weather in Albuquerque
Stadium Noise: moderate
Commentary: Wyoming has an extra week to prepare for this game because Wyoming has a bye in the prior week (Week 6)

Week 8: Colorado State at Wyoming (MWC Mountain Division Game)
Game #: 7
Game Date: Saturday, October 19, 2013
Kickoff Time: TBA
Stadium: Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium (Laramie, WY)
Elevation of Stadium: 7,220 feet
Elevation Change for Colorado State: increase by 2,030 feet
Travel Distance for Colorado State: insignificant (less than 1,000 miles)
Time Change for Colorado State: none
Field Surface: artificial (Desso Challenge Pro 60)
Weather: temperature could be in the 40’s in the evening, but Wyoming practices in similar weather in Laramie
Stadium Noise: high
Commentary: “Border War” (Both teams are separated by less than 60 miles)

Week 9: Wyoming at San Jose State
Game #: 8
Game Date: Saturday, October 26, 2013
Kickoff Time: TBA
Stadium: Spartan Stadium (San Jose, CA)

Time Change for Wyoming: decrease by 1 hour (MT to PT)
Field Surface: artificial (FieldTurf)
Weather: (Kickoff time TBA) insignificant (late October)
Stadium Noise: moderate
Commentary: This game will be a great matchup between Wyoming QB Brett Smith (excluded from 2013 Heisman Trophy Watchlist due to weak 2012 and 2013 teams, but a great QB) and SJSU QB David Fales (2013 Heisman Trophy Watchlist).  Wyoming plays rival Colorado State in the prior week (Week 8).  SJSU has an extra week to prepare for this game because SJSU has a bye in the prior week (Week 8).

Week 10: October 29, 2013 through November 4, 2013
BYE WEEK

Week 11: Fresno State at Wyoming
Game #: 9
Game Date: Saturday, November 9, 2013
Kickoff Time: TBA
Stadium: Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium (Laramie, WY)
Elevation of Stadium: 7,220 feet
Elevation Change for Fresno State: increase by 6,885 feet
Travel Distance for Fresno State: insignificant (less than 1,000 miles)
Time Change for Fresno State: increase by 1 hour (PT to MT)
Field Surface: artificial (Desso Challenge Pro 60)
Weather: (kickoff time is TBA) temperature could be in the 30’s by the evening
Stadium Noise: moderate to high
Commentary: This is a possible trap game for Fresno State.  Last season, Fresno State underperformed in their first game of that season in cold weather at a high elevation (at Colorado State).  This game is an opportunity for Wyoming QB Brett Smith to establish himself as a 2014 Heisman Trophy contender by outperforming Fresno State QB Derek Carr who is a 2013 Heisman Trophy contender.  Wyoming will have an extra week to prepare for this game because Wyoming has a bye in the prior week (Week 10).  Fresno State has a significant elevation increase of 6,885 feet that will likely have an adverse effect in the 4th quarter, especially on Fresno State linemen.

Week 12: Wyoming at Boise State (MWC Mountain Division Game)
Game #: 10
Game Date: Saturday, November 16, 2013
Kickoff Time: TBA
Stadium: Bronco Stadium (Boise, ID)
Elevation of Stadium: 2,695 feet
Elevation Change for Wyoming: decrease by 4,525 feet
Travel Distance for Wyoming: insignificant (less than 1,000 miles)
Time Change for Wyoming: none
Field Surface: artificial (Blue FieldTurf)
Weather: (kickoff time is TBA) temperature could drop to the 40’s by nighttime; possible snow on the ground, possible snow before and/or during game
Stadium Noise: moderate
Commentary: Wyoming has 3 straight difficult games: away at San Jose State in Week 9, bye in Week 10, home against Fresno State in Week 11, and away at Boise State in Week 12

Week 13: Hawai’i at Wyoming
Game #: 11
Game Date: Saturday, November 23, 2013
Kickoff Time: 12:05pm MT (9:05am HT)
Stadium: Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium (Laramie, WY)
Elevation of Stadium: 7,220 feet
Elevation Change for Hawai’i: increase by 7,180 feet
Travel Distance for Hawai’i: 3,323 miles (flight time is approximately 7 hours)
Time Change for Hawai’i: increase by 3 hours (HT to MT)
Field Surface: artificial (Desso Challenge Pro 60)
Weather: temperature could be in the 30’s at kickoff (12:05pm MT), but may warm during the game; possible snow on the ground; possible snow before and/or during game
Stadium Noise: moderate
Commentary: Hawai’i will be enduring a flight of 7 hours (hello jet lag!), playing at an elevation more than 7,000 feet higher than home, probably playing in a temperature that is 50 degrees colder than home, and enduring a kickoff at 9:05 am HT (12:05pm MT).  This game could get embarrassing for Hawai’i if their 2013 team is a repeat of their 2012 team.  Wyoming Head Coach Howdy Doody may run up the score to save his gig, especially if he is having another disappointing season.

Week 14: Wyoming at Utah State (MWC Mountain Division Game)
Game #: 12
Game Date: Saturday, November 30, 2013
Kickoff Time: 12:00pm MT
Stadium: Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium (Logan, UT)
Elevation of Stadium: 4,710 feet
Elevation Change for Wyoming: decrease by 2,510 feet
Travel Distance for Wyoming: insignificant (less than 1,000 miles)
Time Change for Wyoming: none
Field Surface: artificial (AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D60 Extreme)
Weather: insignificant (afternoon game in late November)
Stadium Noise: high

GRADE (higher grade indicates favorable schedule): C plus

NOTE: Grading Standards: Grades are based on a national scale.  Unlike modern academia, my grades are not inflated.  A grade of “C” is average.  A grade of “C” is neither good nor bad; it is simply average.  A grade of “A” or “F” is rare.

MOMENTUM

Last season, Utah State had an overall record of 11-2 and won their final 7 games, including a 41-15 win against Toledo in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.  Last season, Utah State won the Western Athletic Conference Championship and finished with national rankings of #16 (AP Poll), #17 (Coaches Poll), and #22 (BCS).

GRADE (Momentum): A

COACHING

Head Coach
Current Tenure as Head Coach at Utah State: Matt Wells is in his first season as the Head Coach at Utah State

Last Coaching Position: Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Utah State (2012)

Prior Experience as Head Coach: Junior Varsity Head Coach at Navy (three years)

Other Notable Facts: Wells coaching experience is mostly as a Quarterbacks Coach and Receivers Coach.  Wells has coached in 6 bowl games, including Utah State’s last 2 bowl games (2011 & 2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl).  As the Quarterbacks Coach at Utah State (2011-2012), Wells has developed Utah State QB Chuckie Keeton into one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.  As the Offensive Coordinator at Utah State in 2012, Wells produced a Utah State offense that was ranked #21 in the nation for total offense.  Wells played Quarterback at Utah State (1993-1996).

Commentary: Wells is only 39 years old and among the youngest head coaches at the FBS level, but has 16 years of coaching experience.  Hiring a young head coach is a huge risk, but less of a risk because Wells has a strong connection to Utah State.  If Wells has early success, he may be offered a long-term contract and given an opportunity to become a legendary coach at Utah State.  However, if Wells has early success, he could become the next “Hot Young Coach” and quickly leave for a big paycheck at a big budget program (e.g. Mike MacIntyre).  Thereafter, Utah State will be searching for another head coach and dealing with all of the problems caused by lack of leadership stability.  If Wells does not have early success, the critics will likely be lenient due to Wells strong connection to Utah State and simply argue that Wells should not be offered a contract extension.  Either way, a young head coach is always exciting to watch because a young head coach is intense and innovative.

NOTE: I give a grade of “C” to all rookie coaches and players unless there is cogent evidence that supports a different grade

Offensive Coordinator
Current Tenure as Offensive Coordinator at Utah State: Kevin McGiven is in his first season as the Offensive Coordinator at Utah State.  McGiven is also the Quarterbacks Coach at Utah State.  McGiven has the good fortune of inheriting a Utah State offense that was ranked #21 in the nation for total offense last season.

Last Coaching Position: Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Montana State (FCS) (2012)

Prior Experience as Offensive Coordinator: Montana State (FCS) (2012), Weber State (FCS) (2006-2008), and Southern Utah (FCS) (2005)

Other Notable Facts: As the Offensive Coordinator at Montana State (FCS) in 2012, McGiven produced a Montana State offense that was ranked #20 in FCS for scoring offense and #29 in FCS for total offense that helped Montana State win the Big Sky Conference Championship.  McGiven previously coached at Utah State (2009).

Defensive Coordinator
Current Tenure as Defensive Coordinator at Utah State: Todd Orlando is in his first season as the Defensive Coordinator at Utah State.  Orlando is also the Safeties Coach at Utah State.  Orlando has the good fortune of inheriting a Utah State defense that was ranked #14 in the nation for total defense last season.

Last Coaching Position: Defensive Coordinator at Florida International (2011-2012)

Prior Experience as Defensive Coordinator: Florida International (2011-2012) and Connecticut (2005-2010)

Other Notable Facts: Orlando has coached in 6 bowl games, including one BCS bowl game (2010 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl as Defensive Coordinator at Connecticut).  Orlando won 2 Big East Conference Championships as Defensive Coordinator at Connecticut (2010) (2007).  Several of the defenses that Orlando has coached have achieved high national rankings.  Orlando played linebacker at Wisconsin (1990-1994).

Special Teams Coordinator
Current Tenure as Special Teams Coordinator at Utah State: Dave Ungerer is in his first season as the Special Teams Coordinator at Utah State.  Ungerer is also the Running Backs Coach at Utah State.

Last Coaching Position: Special Teams Coordinator and Running Backs Coach at Washington State (2010-2011)

Prior Experience as Special Teams Coordinator: Washington State (2010-2011), Elon (FCS) (2009), Oregon State (2007-2008), Alabama (2003-2006), California (2002), Lehigh (2000-2001), Maryland (1994-1996), and Holy Cross (FCS) (1988-1991)

Other Notable Facts: Ungerer has been very successful at coaching kickoff and kickoff return units.  Ungerer has coached several successful returners, place kickers, and punters.

GRADE (Coaching): C plus

Field Surface: artificial (FieldTurf)
Weather: Temperature may be in the 90’s at kickoff (6:00pm MT), but will cool during the game.  Utah State practices in similar weather in Logan.
Stadium Noise: extremely high
Commentary: Great rivalry game that should have been scheduled as the second or third game of the season for each team because every team plays below their full potential in their first game.  Last season, Utah State beat Utah in Logan by a score of 27-20 in overtime.  This should be another very close and very exciting rivalry game.

Elevation Change for Utah State: decrease by 4,510 feet
Travel Distance for Utah State: insignificant (less than 1,000 miles)
Time Change for Utah State: decrease by 1 hour
Field Surface: grass
Weather: (Kickoff time TBA) temperature may reach the 90’s during the daytime; LA has a smog problem during the day; high temperatures exacerbate LA’s smog problem
Stadium Noise: moderate to high (LA Memorial Coliseum is a large multi-purpose stadium that has an open bowl design that dissipates noise)
Commentary: This game is an opportunity for Utah State to produce a statement win.  If smog is high, which is possible, both offenses will need to use their running game because neither quarterback will be able to see their receivers.  Fun Fact: On hot days, you can actually taste the smog in the air J

Commentary: Utah State has an away game at USC in the prior week (Week 4) that Utah State can win and produce great momentum heading into this game.  This game will be a great matchup between Utah State QB Chuckie Keeton and SJSU QB David Fales.  Last season, Utah State embarrassed SJSU in SJSU’s homecoming game at Spartan Stadium.  In that game, Utah State won by a score of 49-27 and produced 13 sacks (epic SJSU coaching failure) against SJSU QB David Fales.  Despite being sacked 13 times, SJSU QB David Fales had 38 completions on 50 attempts (76%), 467 passing yards, and 3 passing TDs.

Commentary: Jet lag could be a problem for some of the younger Hawai’i players who are not accustomed to Hawaii’s long trips.  Hawai’i has a significant elevation increase of 4,670 feet that will likely have an adverse effect in the 4th quarter, especially on Hawai’i linemen.  Utah State has an extra week to prepare for this game because Utah State has a bye in the prior week (Week 9).
